Palliative Care, For Caregivers & Family

Palliative care aims to relieve suffering in all stages of disease and is not limited to end of life care.

Palliative care aims to relieve suffering in all stages of disease and is not limited to end of life care. Palliative care is provided at the same time as curative or life-prolonging disease treatments.

Palliative care can help reduce pain or treatment side effects. Palliative care may help you and your loved ones better understand your illness, talk more openly about your feelings, or decide what treatment you want or do not want. It can also help with communication among your doctors, nurses, and loved ones. You may talk about anything and everything during a palliative care visit, including:

  • Specialized treatment of pain, nausea, fatigue itching and other symptoms and side effects related to illness and/or treatment
  • Emotional and social challenges, such as helping your family get along better
  • Guidance, clarity, and support to help understand your illness and short and long-term treatment options
  • Holistic care for a patient, family, mind, body and spirit
  • Goals and dreams
  • Hospice care
  • Advanced care planning: Facilitating decisions regarding life-sustaining treatment before a crisis occurs. Advance directives are instructions to your doctor and loved ones about what kind of care you want if you become unable to speak for yourself
