The team of physicians and staff at Radiation Oncology Associates use advanced approaches to radiation treatment and a full spectrum of therapeutic treaments.

The team of physicians and staff at Radiation Oncology Associates use advanced approaches to radiation treatment and a full spectrum of therapeutic treaments. Capabilities include external beam radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and prostate seed implant.

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy is the most commonly used form of radiation therapy. It delivers ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells. The radiation is directed to the tumor while protecting non-diseased organs or tissue.
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) allows for very precise external beam radiotherapy treatments. IMRT allows for the radiation dose to conform more precisely to the three-dimensional shape of the tumor by controlling the intensity of the beam in multiple small volumes.
  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is the use of frequent imaging during a course of radiation therapy to improve its precision and accuracy. The treatment machine is equipped with imaging technology that allows the physician to see the tumor immediately before radiation is delivered. IGRT is used on tumors in areas of the body that are prone to movement.
  • Prostate Seed Impant - Radiation treatment is delivered by implanting tiny radioactive seeds within the prostate gland. These seeds deliver low dose radiation continuously for a period of time before becoming inactive. The seeds remain in the prostate forever. This is an outpatient procedure.

The Children’s Oncology Group Long-Term Follow-Up Guidelines for Survivors of Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancers (COG LTFU Guidelines) are a resource for healthcare professionals who provide ongoing care to survivors of pediatric malignancies. Although the information within the guidelines will certainly prove valuable to the survivors themselves, the only version currently available is targeted to healthcare professionals. Therefore, survivors who choose to review these guidelines are strongly encouraged to do so with the assistance of a healthcare professional knowledgeable about long-term follow-up care for survivors of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers.
