Reflections on the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable Conference
12 December, 2024
In late November, NCC’s Jorge Arambula traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to attend the American Cancer Society’s National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable Conference. Jorge, who is NCC’s lead staffer working on colorectal cancer initiatives, said the conference stands out as one of the most impactful events he’s had the privilege of attending.
“It was incredibly informative and featured powerful speakers who captivated and inspired the group,” Jorge said. “The networking opportunities were exceptional, offering valuable insights into the innovative approaches other states are using to raise awareness and increase colorectal cancer screening rates. It was a great combination of learning, inspiration, and collaboration, leaving me energized to bring new ideas and strategies back to our community.”
One of the conference highlights was the Lived Experience Panel: Through the Lens of Colorectal Cancer Survivors and Caregivers. This moving session featured survivors who shared their deeply personal and powerful journeys. “Their stories served as a heartfelt reminder of why we dedicate ourselves to this cause,” Jorge said. The firsthand accounts also underscored the critical need to address disparities, promote early detection, and ensure no one faces colorectal cancer alone, he added.
Jorge also had the privilege of reconnecting with Paula Chambers Raney, an inspiring survivor and the Hope Coordinator for Fight Colorectal Cancer. Jorge and others from NCC were able to hear Paula’s story earlier this year as part of a Community of Practice and Jorge connected with her in person as that effort wrapped up in August.
“Paula’s resilience and determination continue to leave a lasting impression,” he said. “Her commitment to using her experience as a source of hope and advocacy for others is a testament to the meaningful impact of our work. Her story is a powerful reminder of the lives we touch through our efforts.”
Another standout session was Public Awareness Strategies to Promote Colorectal Cancer Screenings: Best Practices and Successes from Across the Country. This presentation showcased innovative campaigns and community initiatives making a tangible difference. Programs like Cheeky Charity and The Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board exemplified creativity and collaboration in raising awareness and increasing screenings. Their success stories sparked actionable ideas that Jorge said he is excited to adapt and bring to Nevada.
Jorge said the conference reinforced the importance of our shared mission—increasing colorectal cancer screening and reducing deaths from this disease. It offered learning opportunities, a renewed sense of purpose, and the chance to connect with others equally passionate about this work.
“I’m looking forward to putting these insights into action and continuing to make a difference in the fight against colorectal cancer,” Jorge said.
Anyone who shares a similar interest can join NCC’s Colorectal Cancer Collaborative, a work group that meets quarterly to work on projects to increase colorectal cancer screening in Nevada.
