People in the LGBTQ+ community have increased cancer risks because of health differences linked to economic, social, and environmental disadvantages. For years, members of the LGBTQ+ community have been targeted by the tobacco industry, faced conscious and unconscious bias in healthcare, and used coping mechanisms that inadvertently may increase the risk for cancer.
Nevada Cancer Coalition's team is focused on working with diverse and underserved communities, including rural, Black, Hispanic and Tribal Nevadans. In early 2023, the team identified a desire to increase competency in working with the LGBTQ+ community and expand outreach to further engage with this community in a relevant and welcoming way.
The team committed to this for the entire year, and, in short, it was a success.
