Upcoming Cancer Survivor Workshops

Partners throughout the state are offering workshops and classes to help survivors navigate the complexities of cancer treatment and improve quality of life through a variety of skills and knowledge.  Here's a look at the upcoming programs:

Empower Your Journey at Saint Mary's Center for Cancer in Reno, Starts February 8

This free four-part survivorship program is designed for oncology patients at any stage in their cancer journey to help individuals regain their physical, emotional, and spiritual health.  Workshops are 1.5 hours long once per month, and held in a supportive and collaborative environment. Sessions are led by a team of experts and cover topics including: symptom and side effect management; nutrition and your diet; physical health and wellness; and spiritual and mental wellness. Cancer: Thriving and Surviving
at Dignity Health WomansCare Center in Henderson, Starts February 8
OR Sanford Center for Aging in Reno, Starts February 16

This free workshop series, developed by Stanford University School of Medicine, helps participants set personal goals and develop skills to overcome barriers and successfully manage their own care. Each class is 2.5 hours long and the series is six weeks at the Henderson location and seven weeks at the Reno location. Sessions are facilitated by two trained leaders who are cancer survivors or caregivers. Topics include: living with uncertainty; complementary therapies; cancer and relationships; communication and decision making; and more. Nutrition Seminars at Northeastern Nevada Radiation Oncology in Elko, Starts January 18

Licensed nutritional counselors host this free monthly seminar and demonstrate how to prepare a healthy food or smoothie, with options for patients who may be struggling to gain weight or for those who need to watch calories. They also answer general questions from attendees. The seminars are the third Wednesday of each month (except November and December) from 4 - 5 p.m. at the center, located at 2003 Errecart Blvd. in Elko. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA at Durango Hills YMCA in Las Vegas, Starts week of February 27

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program with twice-weekly 90-minute sessions focusing on physical and social activities for cancer survivors, focusing on strengthening the whole person. The class uses traditional exercise methods to ease participants back into fitness and a healthy weight, build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve confidence and self-esteem.
