Volunteer Spotlight: Cathy Eberhardt

This quarter we’re excited to spotlight Cathy Eberhardt, our top volunteer in 2024. Cathy donated more volunteer hours than anyone else, putting together provider toolkits for our rural Nevada road trip, assembling goodie bags for the Biggest Little Skin Cancer Screening, and educating community members at outreach events.

“Everyone that meets her says she’s wonderful, and she is,” said NCC Community Engagement Manager Sarah Grocki. “She’s really passionate about the mission because of her personal connections to cancer, and she’s really eager to get the message out there about cancer screenings.”

Cathy connected with NCC in September 2023 after meeting Lily at Dozers and Dirt, an event hosted by our friends at Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. She was immediately interested in getting involved with NCC, which brings sunscreen and sun safety information to the Dozers and Dirt event.

“NCC focuses on prevention and screening for all cancers not just certain ones,” Cathy said, which was why she said she wanted to get involved.

Skin cancer prevention and early detection is an area where Cathy has provided great support. She said she loved helping out with sunscreen and skin checks at Greater Nevada Field. “I also secretly like coming in and helping stuff bags and folders for you guys to distribute,” she added. “I just love coming in and helping and being around people that care as much as I do. Cancer sucks and whatever I can do to help someone else makes me happy.”

Sarah said Cathy’s help is valued more than she may know. “Cathy says we do more for her than she does for us, but I don’t think that’s true,” Sarah said. “She just really likes to help and she does just as much for us.”
