Yogurt May Help Prevent Colon Cancer
02 February, 2025
A new study suggests that long-term yogurt consumption may help protect against aggressive colon cancer by promoting a healthy gut microbiome. Researchers at Mass General Brigham analyzed data from over 150,000 individuals over three decades and found that those who ate at least two servings of yogurt per week had lower rates of certain colorectal cancers, particularly Bifidobacterium-positive proximal colon cancer.
Yogurt, a fermented food, has been linked to various health benefits, including reduced risks of Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. Other fermented foods like kefir and kimchi have also been shown to reduce inflammation and improve gut microbiome diversity. However, experts caution against yogurts high in added sugars and recommend opting for plain varieties.
The study reinforces previous findings that yogurt supports gut health and strengthens the gut barrier, which may help prevent inflammation and lower colon cancer risk. Experts encourage yogurt consumption as part of a balanced diet rich in fiber, healthy fats, and polyphenols.
