Millions of women across the country now have access to free screening mammography due to the inclusion of screening mammography as an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). However, if diagnostic imaging is needed after an abnormality is found on a screening test, or if they are considered to be of high-risk, the patient may be faced with hundreds to thousands of dollars in costs — all before they even know whether they have breast cancer. Although some insurers cover additional diagnostic imaging such as diagnostic mammography, ultrasound and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), patient out-of-pocket costs vary greatly.
