Celebrating Partnership & Progress in Radon Awareness

01 January, 2025

The Nevada Radon Education Program (NREP) has been working with the Nevada Cancer Coalition and many other partners in spreading awareness about the dangers of radon gas. Through collaboration, we have reached more people than ever, emphasizing the connection between radon exposure and lung cancer.

Dr. Chivonne Harrigal speaks at the Tri-Regional Radon Conference in 2024 in Reno, Nev.

NCC played a key role in the success of the Tri-Regional Radon Conference, which brought together representatives from 13 states and tribes, along with the EPA, to advance radon education. Attendees were captivated by Dr. Chivonne Harrigal’s presentation on radon, the importance of low-dose chest X-rays, and the need for a mobile screening unit—so much so that she was invited to speak at the Annual Radon Summit in Orlando last October!

Of course, we can’t forget Larry the Lungs, who was a crowd favorite at the event.

Together with NCC and the American Lung Association, NREP participated in Lung Force Walks in Reno and Las Vegas, raising awareness about lung health. The program is also engaging in development of the Nevada Cancer Plan to ensure that radon remains a key part of goals and strategies to reduce the burden of cancer. Additionally, thanks to NCC, NREP now has Nevada’s first-ever radon/lung cancer overlay map, visually demonstrating the impact of lung cancer across the state.

Outreach efforts have also extended to tribal communities, where an educational event at a tribal health clinic led to an invitation to train their staff on radon risks. This effort resulted in distributing radon test kits and information to tribal members and the housing authority, empowering communities to take action.

Another milestone moment was being invited as a guest speaker at Huntsman Cancer Institute’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month event. As one of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment centers, Huntsman Cancer Institute is at the forefront of groundbreaking lung cancer studies. Speaking at this prestigious event was an opportunity to highlight radon’s role in lung cancer and the importance of early detection and outreach. Engaging with leading researchers, oncologists, and advocates reinforced that radon education must be a critical part of lung cancer prevention efforts nationwide.

Collaboration with NCC has also brought radon awareness to major public events, including:

  • Lighting the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  • The Pink & Pearl breast and lung cancer screening event at Sunrise Hospital
  • Lung cancer awareness events at Renown Health

By working together, we are making a lasting impact on public health, ensuring more Nevadans understand the risks of radon exposure and the steps they can take to protect their homes and families.

Together, we are saving lives—one radon test at a time!
