Protect Your Home: Free Radon Test Kits Available for Nevada Residents

01 January, 2025

As we kick off National Radon Action Month this January, the Nevada Radon Education Program is offering a crucial opportunity for homeowners across the state. From January 1 to February 28, Nevadans can obtain free short-term radon test kits at Extension offices and partner locations statewide, while supplies last.

Understanding the Radon Risk

Radon is a silent threat lurking in many homes. This naturally occurring radioactive gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it impossible to detect without proper testing. The dangers of radon exposure are significant:

  • It's the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
  • The EPA estimates it causes 21,000 deaths annually.
  • In Nevada, nearly 26% of homes tested have radon levels at or above the EPA's action level.
  • The World Health Organization recommends mitigation at even lower levels.

Chris Kelly, program manager for the Nevada Radon Education Program, emphasizes the importance of testing: "This risk is 100% preventable through testing and mitigation. Lung cancer claims more lives each year than any other cancer, affecting more women than breast cancer. Testing your home for radon is a simple, critical step to protect your family's health."

How to Test Your Home

Testing for radon is a straightforward process:

  1. Obtain a free test kit from a local Extension office or partner location.
  2. Place the kit in your home according to the provided instructions for three days.
  3. Mail the kit to the lab using the prepaid envelope.
  4. Receive your results in a few weeks.

If elevated levels are detected, homeowners should consult certified radon mitigation professionals, as recommended by the EPA.

Upcoming Free Presentations

To further educate the public, the Nevada Radon Education Program has scheduled several free presentations on radon risk and home testing:

  • January 14, 10 a.m. - Boulder City Library
  • January 16, 10 a.m. - Extension office, Pahrump
  • January 21, 6:30 p.m. - Highlands Homeowners Association, Sun Valley
  • January 22, 5:50 p.m. - Lyon County Library, Yerington
  • January 23, 11 a.m. - Extension office, Carson City

Nevada's Unique Radon Risk

Nevada's geology puts many homes at risk for elevated radon levels, particularly in northern Nevada. During real estate transactions, 40% of homes tested in northern Nevada show elevated levels. Testing is less common in southern Nevada, highlighting the need for increased awareness statewide. To address this, the program is offering free continuing education classes for Realtors across Nevada to encourage radon testing during home inspections.

Take Action Now

Don't miss this opportunity to protect your home and loved ones. Visit your local Extension office or the Nevada Radon Education Program website for more information on testing your home or business.
