Legislature wraps with wins and losses for cancer control

We are thrilled to share that the bill NCC had worked on for several years is now a law thanks to efforts during the 82nd Nevada Legislature, which ended session just last month. That news is great for people who need breast cancer screening – more on this below – but is tempered by a blow to youth vaping prevention funding, which wasn’t allocated for the biennium.

NCC worked with Ferrato Co. for support during the legislative session. Their team authored an end of session recap, and we are sharing a few highlights here with you.

Grassroots Success: PTO plants trees at Mamie Towles Elementary School

While advocating for personal sun safety and sunscreen use has been a core of NCC’s Sun Smart Schools program, we’ve also encouraged environmental changes to increase access to shade. This includes planting more trees.

Earlier this year we were thrilled to learn that parents at one northern Nevada school had launched their own tree planting campaign, a grassroots effort we’d like to spotlight.

Resource Highlight: Cancer and Careers

Cancer, in the past, was often thought of as a disease of aging. For many people that’s still true, and their cancer diagnosis may come later in life. But for more and more people, a cancer diagnosis may come in their 20s, 30’s or 40’s, just as they are launching their careers or hitting their prime working years.

The founders of Cancer and Careers learned this when they realized some of their colleagues were working through a cancer diagnosis and treatment, often without saying anything to anyone at work.

Thrive Kitchen: Making Good Food Choices

We're back with an installment of Thrive Kitchen, our tips and information on healthy eating for survivors during treatment and beyond.

Our friends at Leukemia and Lymphoma Society put together a fantastic video series on "Making Good Food Choices" as part of their Let's Talk Nutrition @ the Grocery Store. The series, hosted by registered dietitians from LLS, features short videos on food safety, food labels, and how to find healthy options in the store.

Check out their first video here:

Mailed Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) Online Courses

In 2019, CDC and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors brought together leading health care and public health experts to discuss how mailed fecal immunochemical test (FIT) programs could improve colorectal cancer screening rates nationwide. The meeting paved the way for tools to help partners put successful mailed FIT programs into action to save more lives. The tools are available through the CDC at the link below.

Saving lives through new developments in lung cancer screenings: A webinar for primary care teams

The webinar focuses on providing clinicians and care teams with education on lung cancer symptoms so that they engage patients in preventive routine screening conversations utilizing targeted, culturally responsive evidence-based interventions. A secondary goal is to increase knowledge about screening protocols and survivorships issues and to increase awareness about the burden of lung cancer incidence and mortality.

Webinar presented by American Cancer Society in partnership with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.

Navigation to Clinical Trials: An ACS Webinar Series, Part 3

Clinical trials are essential in advancing potential new cancer treatments from the research setting to the cancer care clinic. Many patients express interest in participating in clinical research, yet only a small fraction ultimately enroll in a cancer clinical trial.

This three-part webinar series will focus on the importance of oncology clinical trials, processes for addressing patient barriers preventing participation in clinical trials, and practices for navigating patients through clinical trials.
