Did you know that some cancer treatments can make it easier for you to get sick from contaminated foods? The National Cancer Institute recently released a video highlighting 8 tips for food safety to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. Watch the video, or review the tips below.
- Wash hands, knives, and countertops before and after preparing food.
- Use separate cutting boards and knives for meats and produce.
- Wash all raw fruits and vegetables before eating them.
- Thaw meats and fish in the refrigerator or the microwave, not in the sink.
- Don't consume raw fish or meat or unroasted nuts.
- Don't consume unpasteurized juices, eggs, or dairy products.
- Use a thermometer to cook meat or eggs to safe temperatures.
- Don't eat food sitting out for more than 2 hours. Refrigerate leftovers immediately and eat them within three days.
