Reflections on the Impact Summit 2024 with NMHEC

This November, NCC’s Valerie Martinez was among the speakers at the NMHEC Impact Summit 2024, presenting alongside Cheryl Ballard, founder of B&A Entertainment Services, Inc., one of our valued community partners. Their presentation focused on leveraging culturally tailored, peer-to-peer group interventions to increase breast cancer screenings among minority women. Programs like Pink Ribbon Sunday and Friend to Friend have significantly enhanced breast health education within the Las Vegas African American community.

Senator Rosen Pushes for More Residency Slots

As we continue work on the 2026-2030 Nevada Cancer Plan, it has been made clear that we must focus on expanding our healthcare workforce and increasing the number of physicians in our state. That starts with increasing the number of residency slots available in Nevada, because we know that many medical residents stay in the state where they completed their residency training.

ALCSI Distinguished Lecture Series: Dr. Narjust Florez

ALCSI (American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative) hosts Dr. Narjust Florez as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Florez is associate director of the Cancer Care Equity Program at the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, leads the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Lung Cancer Considered Podcast, and is the principal investigator of the Sexual Health Assessment in Women with Lung Cancer (SHAWL) Study - the largest study to-date evaluating sexual dysfunction in women with lung cancer.

A study published by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) highlights how telehealth is now a viable option for delivering palliative care, providing comparable benefits to in-person appointments. This finding is particularly important for cancer patients who have advanced needs, for whom palliative care helps manage pain and symptoms, improves emotional support, and addresses life quality concerns.
