Debbie Anderson: Lung Cancer HERO

Nevada Cancer Coalition Board Member Debbie Anderson is in Washington D.C. serving as a lung cancer HERO. We're sharing this story that she shared with us:

In 2021, Debbie was in her mid-50s, is a Director of Case Manager and Behavioral Health, and is active in the rural community of Elko NV where she and her husband relocated from North Dakota. This meant leaving their home of 19 years, her five children, and now seven grandchildren to advance her career in healthcare. Now it is her co-workers and community who have become her support system.

Lily Helzer, MPH

Lily Helzer is a native Nevadan, a graduate from the UNR School of Public Health, and has enjoyed her varied career in Nevada public health efforts supporting chronic disease prevention and control initiatives. She had the good fortune to work alongside NCC for a number of years before officially joining in February 2023. Lily spends as much time outside as she can manage, traveling, hiking, trail running, camping, snowshoeing and skiing, often accompanied by her son and husband.

Nevada’s lawmakers on Wednesday, March 1 will get to walk through an inflatable colon, explore a pair of jumbo-sized lungs, and see the Mammovan mobile mammography truck in action as part of Cancer Day at the Legislature. The event is hosted by Nevada Cancer Coalition to educate legislators and other Nevadans about the importance of prevention and early detection in reducing cancer in the state.

Conversation Ready Toolkit: How to Talk About End-of-Life Care

This toolkit is intended to help clinicians address some of the challenges of engaging with patients and families in end-of-life care conversations over time.

The four cases present patients with diverse backgrounds and experiences at different points of illness, as well as diverse clinicians and care settings.

Each case describes the progression of the patient's illness and outlines key considerations for clinicians to engage the patient and family in discussions about what matters most to the patient at the end of life.
