It’s often simple to be Sun Smart in the summertime. We may feel the heat of the sun on our skin reminding us to take cover or reapply sunscreen. We see sunscreen displays front and center at the store reminding us to stock up. And sometimes we see the painful result of not applying sunscreen—a sunburn.
Several years ago, before ThriveNV was created to support people in Nevada diagnosed with cancer, our team talked to people from throughout the state who had cancer to find out what resources and supports would improve their quality of life. Many said peer support was very much in need, especially for those living in rural Nevada who may have less access to community support.
Nevada Cancer Coalition’s Early Detection Task Force is taking up cervical cancer screening in its first meeting of 2022, seeking to find answers as to why Pap testing rates have declined and how clinical and public health professionals can work together to turn that around.
The National Cancer Institute this month updated its PDQ on advance planning and end of life discussions to include details from a recent study of surgical and medical oncology inpatients. Their results showed that nearly half of those surveyed would rather have advance care planning discussions with their primary care providers.
People who have been diagnosed with cancer and are in treatment may have different nutritional needs than before their diagnosis. That can include eating and drinking enough, changing diet based on impacts of treatment, or adjusting the types of foods one consumes.
Researchers also agree that a healthy diet—one that provides adequate nutrients and hydration—can help patients to feel better before, during, and after treatments.
Project ECHO Nevada presents this palliative care session as part of an ongoing series hosted the third Friday of each month at 12 noon.
This program will establish forum of health care practitioners throughout Nevada to support the delivery of palliative care. Our goal is to establish a resource of expertise and education for a diverse health care audience on practices, resources, and policy in palliative care.
